BEAR Scotland want to create the facility, including a salt barn and ancillary accommodation in a secure compound on a site west of Auchengeich Road in Moodiesburn.

But residents say there’s already a high volume of lorries passing through the village, and are worried about the safety of children and pedestrians, noise and pollution, as well as the impact on the roads that the development would bring.

They also say that BEAR Scotland - a service provider in the Scottish roads maintenance sector – has been allowed to operate at the site without planning permission for some time.

More than 50 people have put forward objections to the plans via the planning application on North Lanarkshire Council’s website. Debbie Horn, chairperson of Moodiesburn Community Development Trust (MCDT) Traffic Calming Sub-Committee’, has written a letter to the council’s planning department.

She said: “Moodiesburn already suffers from an excess of heavy lorries and constant traffic that the village was never designed to take.

“The additional vibration, pollution and noise together with the increase in traffic movement will lead to an even more dangerous and unwanted situation than already exists.

“These proposals will make living in Moodiesburn more intolerable for many residents.

However, A BEAR Scotland spokesperson said: “We have submitted a planning application to North Lanarkshire Council for a maintenance depot at Chryston.

“The proposed route to and from the depot has been chosen following detailed discussions with North Lanarkshire Council and Police Scotland.

“The depot will also support local employment and business in the area.”
