More funding pledged for Lanarkshire Beatson

The charity is pledging to raise £500,000 to further enhance the new state-of-the-art radiotherapy treatment centre.

Lanarkshire Beatson will be a new £22 million Satellite Radiotherapy Centre which will include two state-of-the-art linear accelerators, delivering high-energy radiation to shrink tumours and kill cancer cells as well as a CT simulator to help plan radiotherapy treatment.

This will enable around 80 patient treatments a day, predominantly from Lanarkshire, who require radiotherapy for lung, breast, prostate and rectal cancers to be treated.

Chief Executive of The Beatson Cancer Charity, David Welch said: “This much needed facility will see 21,000 patient treatments delivered each year. By enhancing the facilities and improving the experience of patients, Beatson Cancer Charity will impact positively on between 1,000 and 1,200 cancer patients and their families each year and thousands more long term.

“We are completely committed to raising the funds and have already set out a number of fundraising initiatives for the people of Lanarkshire to get behind, such as our ‘Wear it Yellow’ campaign which has already been hugely successful.

“The services the charity provides are incredible and really help support patients and their families during such a difficult time.

“It is fantastic that we will be in a position to provide these services locally in Lanarkshire but we are counting on the local communities to get involved and support what is such a valuable and worthwhile charity.”
