More lead thefts in Clydesdale

NO public building in Clydesdale - ranging from schools to kirks - seems to be safe from a sudden spate of lead thefts.

According to the Gazette’s calculations, at least FIVE prominent local buildings have been hit by metal thieves in the past week or so .

In the latest crimewave, the rooftop raiders struck first early last week at Lanark Library – better known locally as The Lindsay Institute – in Hope Street.

The exact time or even date of this crime is unknown as it could have happened days before a nearby resident noticed a gap in the building’s roof and reported it.

A council spokeswoman said: “An inspection is currently underway to assess the damage and ensure the building is wind and water tight.

“This is the second incidence of this type of theft from the Lanark Library building.”
