Motherwell to host its first street fair

M&D Events has been awarded a licence from North Lanarkshire Council to run the event along Brandon Parade South in Motherwell Shopping Centre from April 29-May 2.

The company has been involved for many years with the annual Bellshill street fair, which is run by the community council, and wanted to bring a similar event to Motherwell.

The street fair will have an emphasis on promoting health and fitness with a stage being set up outside Wilkinson’s for local dance schools to perform across the four days.

In addition there will be appearances from several well-known characters such as Elsa and Olaf from Frozen to greet the crowds.

Rides and activities will be on offer for the young, and the young at heart, and market stalls will provide a huge variety of different goods to complement the existing shops.

Kelly Caulfield, of M&D Events, said: “We have been involved with the Bellshill street fair for years.

“We decided now was the right time to try something in Motherwell.

“There isn’t a great deal to do over the bank holiday weekend in the town so we want to try to give something back to the community.

“I took a walk down Brandon Parade South last Tuesday morning and the street was full, so we know Motherwell has greater footfall than Bellshill.

“If Bellshill can hold a three-day street fair then Motherwell can do a four-day event.

“This can only be of benefit for everyone. For residents there will be lots to do and see, and for the business and shops there is the potential to increase the number of people coming into the town centre.

“I hope the people of Motherwell and North Lanarkshire in general come out to support the inaugural event and if it is a success we’ll be looking to make it bigger and better for next year.”
