Move to save war memorial

East Kilbride History Society has written to North Lanarkshire Council asking it to ensure the sacrifice steel workers made during the two World Wars is remembered.

The Dalzell Works contains a memorial plaque to employees who lost their lives in the two conflicts.

Although the interest Liberty House Group has shown in the Dalzell Works is a positive step should a deal fail to materialise the history society is concerned the building will be demolished.

If that were to happen they want the council to ensure it removes the war memorial for safe keeping.

Joe Allan, from the history society, said: “Ideally the Dalzell mill will be saved and become operational again.

“But, should the worst come to the worst we have written to the council to make sure they are aware of the war memorial and save it if necessary.

“I’m not sure what would be done with it, but whether it went to the Heritage Centre, the British Legion or was attached to the Steelman statue at Ravenscraig at least that could then be discussed.”

A council spokesman said: “The war memorial attached to the Dalzell steelworks building is of great historical significance.

“We would work with all relevant parties to ensure its preservation if necessary.

“However, we remain engaged with the Scottish Steel Task Force to explore all avenues which could give Dalzell a viable future.”
