MSP backs move to block phone mast

MSP Margaret Mitchell has welcomed the announcement that North Lanarkshire Council's planning committee will carry out a site visit before making a decision on a controversial mobile phone mast application.

Vodafone wants to erect a mast on land near Eastfield Primary School.

Central Scotland MSP Margaret Mitchell said: "Having visited the proposed site in November 2009, I am aware of its close proximity to Eastfield Primary School, which is in the middle of a residential area.

"As such, I consider the location to be totally unacceptable.

"Furthermore, when I wrote to the company in November raising my concerns, the head of public affairs with Vodafone confirmed that a number of other letters had been received - all raising concerns about the proposed site's proximity to the school and housing, and that Vodafone were now assessing alternative options.

"I am therefore amazed that Vodafone has proceeded with this application."

She added: "It now seems obvious that Vodafone have totally ignored the wishes and the concerns of the parents, pupils and the local community around Eastfield Primary School.

"In these circumstances, I can only hope that the local government councillors on the planning committee will reject this planning application. "
