MSP gets a boost from Dennis Canavan

Former Labour MP Dennis Canavan is urging voters to back local SNP parliamentary candidate Stuart McDonald in the May 7 General Election.

Mr Canavan previously served as Labour MP for areas including Kilsyth, Lennoxtown and Milton of Campsie when they formed part of the old West Stirlingshire seat.

He defeated the SNP’s Jeanette Jones in October 1974 by less than 400 votes.

Mr Canavan chaired the Yes Scotland campaign during the independence referendum, which was where he got to know Mr McDonald, who was a senior researcher there.

Now he is backing the SNP man’s bid for success in the May 7 General Election.

Mr Canavan said: “We need people like Stuart in Parliament to continue that (independence) campaign and to carry on the struggle for a fairer society with higher standards of social justice and an end to nuclear weapons.”

Mr McDonald said: “It was a pleasure to work for Dennis Canavan during the referendum campaign.

“We know he is still held in high regard by people locally and across Scotland – and from different political backgrounds.

“He has a distinguished record as an MP, MSP and campaigner, and is recognised as a man of principle who is absolutely dedicated to social justice.

“To have his backing in this election is a great honour”.
