MSP objects to Kildrum pub closure

Owners Punch Taverns are seeking to sell off the Red Comyn and have applied for planning permission to convert it into two retail units, believed to be a licensed grocer and a bookmakers.

SNP politician Jamie Hepburn has conducted a survey of opinion in the area and found 95 per cent of respondents oppose the plans.

He has now made his own submission to North Lanarkshire Council.

Mr Hepburn said: “The strength of feeling locally on this issue is clear and the majority who have taken the time to contact me are opposed to this move.

“There are serious concerns about the impact that the loss of this pub would have on the community and social life in the area, and also regarding the proposed replacements.

“There is real concern about having a licensed grocer so close to the play-park and the potential of anti-social behaviour and public drinking.

“On top of that the questions about the impact this would have on existing local businesses of a similar nature have not been addressed.

“While there are a range of views in this matter, some residents regard this application as a positive opportunity, it is clear to me that this application does not have the support of the local community.

“On that basis I am calling on the council to reject this application.”

Kildrum Community Council hosted a public meeting on the Red Comyn’s future.

Chairman Bill Dempsey said: “There are 3,157 registered voters in Kildrum and so far we have collected 309 letters and 862 petition signatures from people who do not want this.

“That is one third of the electorate who feel Kildrum does not need or want this change and it should remain a community with its own pub instead of becoming a dormitory.”

The pub has been on sale for three years without any interest from buyers.
