MSP raises the issue of charity campaign

A GLASGOW MSP stepped into the shoes of a Big Issue seller recently in the name of charity.

As part of the annual Big Sell Off, Humza Yousaf took to the streets of Glasgow to sell the popular magazine in support of the publication and Scottish-based charity International Network of Street Papers.

The initiative aims to raise awareness of homelessness, boost Big Issue vendor morale and sales, raise the profile of INSP and the Big Issue in Scotland and also raise funds for both organisations.

Humza Yousaf raised almost £400 for both INSP and the Big Issue, selling more than 50 copies.

The Newton Mearns man told The Extra: “I was keen to get involved again with selling the Big Issue to raise awareness.

“I’m delighted to have taken part in the first-ever Big Sell Off.

“It’s important that the public don’t view street vendors as beggars. They are businesspeople who are trying to make a new start.

“Next time you pass somebody selling the Big Issue why not talk to them and buy a paper — you will be helping them help themselves.”

INSP general manager Maree Aldam added: “The Big Sell-Off and Vendor Week events are a way to celebrate the 14,000 inspirational street paper vendors there are around the world at any one time.

“They all work hard buying and selling street papers, like the Big Issue, to earn their own income and lift themselves out of poverty.”
