Mums welcomed in for brand new Baby Cafe

New mums looking for advice on breastfeeding are invited to drop in to East Renfrewshire’s new Baby Café.

The Baby Cafe will be open every Thursday beginning November 27, 2.30–4.30pm, at Auchenback Resource Centre in Barrhead.

A health visitor or nurse will be on hand to offer mums support and advice on all aspects of breastfeeding.

Some nine local mums who have been trained as breastfeeding peer supporters will also be on hand to offer one to one support at the cafe, on the phone and on the maternity ward.

Nicola Smith, peer team leader, told The Extra: “The Baby Cafe is designed to help mums with the challenges of breastfeeding. Some mums find it easy and simple, but others struggle.

“We want to encourage breastfeeding because a lot of mums who gave up wished they’d carried on longer. With the right support there are many things that can help.”

Only the second of its kind in Scotland, the weekly café is open to all pregnant or breastfeeding mums and their partners — older children are also welcome.

Nicola said: “It’s a place where mums can feel supported and comfortable, and we can help them to make informed choices.”
