Murder trial hears of fatal wounds

Sean Banks (18) was knifed four times, twice in the chest and twice in the back, the High Court in Glasgow heard.

Paul Kane (25), Liam Donnelly (18) and Lewis McMahon (18) deny murdering Mr Banks in North British Road, Uddingston, on September 12 last year.

The court heard Donnelly was asked to “batter” Mr Banks by a female friend who claimed Mr Banks had assaulted her.

The girl, aged 16, said she spoke to Donnelly on the phone and told him Sean Banks had hit her.

The girl was asked by Iain McSporran, prosecuting, what she wanted to happen to Sean and she replied: “A scare.”

She agreed she wanted him hurt.

The court heard Donnelly said he would call her back and she spoke to Kane on Donnelly’s phone in the next call.

In evidence the girl added: “Paul asked if Sean had any weapons on him. I said someone said earlier that night he had a knife on him. Paul said ‘I have a bigger one’.”

The girl said she thought he was joking and wasn’t concerned.

In her police statement she was noted as telling officers Kane phoned her back and said “That’s it done.”

She allegedly told police she asked Kane why he had done it and he replied “because he’s not getting away with hitting a lassie, especially you”.

It was heard she promised not to tell anybody what had happened and that she later learned Mr Banks was dead.

The girl agreed with defence counsel Tony Graham that she phoned Donnelly because he was “almost like a brother” to get him to look out for her.

She also accepted Donnelly never told her that he would go and sort it out for her.

Another teenage girl who gave evidence said Donnelly told her who allegedly carried out the stabbing, and that it wasn’t him.

The three accused also deny assaulting Daniel McAulay to his severe injury and danger of life.

Kane is also accused of threatening a woman with violence if she spoke to the police about his involvement in the attacks.
