New Cadet force aims to inspire Giffnock youths

TO inspire and to achieve is the motto of a youth organisation coming to Giffnock.

The Army Cadet Force is one of the UK's oldest, largest and most successful groups for young people.

And now southside youngsters aged from 12 to 18 will be encouraged to have a positive mental attitude, to be selfless and to contribute to society.

Detachment commander Deborah Young says it is a chance for local youths to learn some new skills.

The 34-year-old from Paisley said: "We used to have a unit in Giffnock but had to close it down a few years ago as the number of children who were coming started to fall.

"But we're going to give it another shot. It is a youth project with a military theme and is really good fun.

"Each week the unit will try something different, from map reading to shooting rifles and adventure training".

The two women will be giving out information at Morrison's in Giffnock on January 16 with the official launch being January 21.

The ACF is sponsored by the army and provides challenging military adventures and community activities.

The syllabus includes hill walking, canoeing, mountain biking and is also involved in the Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme.

She was stationed in the Royal Logistic Corps and when she left decided she wanted to do something along the same lines.

Deborah told The Extra: "I wrote to the ACF headquarters in Ayr to see if there were any opportunities.

"I've been volunteering at the Paisley unit and have now been asked to be in charge of the new one in Giffnock.

"It is a great thing for youngsters to take part in. It enables them to have more confidence, self reliance and is exciting at the same time".
