New community hub plans raise concerns

A new £5.29million village community hub could soon be on the way - but concerns have been raised about the new building.

The facility at 45 Main Street in Lennoxtown will include the local library, cafe, community spaces, offices, NHS facilities and a commercial unit.

A planning application was recently submitted for the development.

However, resident Tommy Starrs has raised concerns.

He said: “The building style and fabric is inappropriate for the site chosen right in the middle of Main Street, but seemingly it will be brick because that is all the council could afford!

“There are health facilities in the building for GPs and clinics, but they are on the third floor.

“How do they expect old people, disabled people and mothers with kids in prams to access it? They said there’s a lift!

“There was a public information session where you could make comments, but it then went to planning the next day, so how could these be included?”

Thomas Glen, director of development and regeneration, said: “Whilst residents will have individual opinions on the design of the new building, the council is confident that it will enhance the built environment in this key location within Lennoxtown.

“The Community Health Partnership and GP practices have been fully involved in the design of the third-floor medical facilities, which include the required lifts to meet the health suite’s needs.

“The information events held to share the designs with the community were entirely separate to the formal planning application process and provided an opportunity for the community to see how the new building will look.

“In line with all planning applications there is an opportunity for representation to be made on the planning proposals now that they have been submitted.”

The next phase of community engagement sessions will take place in August and September.
