New Lanark Grammar School opens

WITH a mere 827 year long history behind it, the new Lanark Grammar School has opened its doors to pupils for the first time.

Reputedly Europe's longest continuous established secondary school, it took on its latest incarnation in the 23 millon complex — to rave reviews from staff and pupils.

Head teacher Mark Sherry said: "I am sure the new school and its wonderful facilities will stimulate learning and we are proud to be involved in what is a historic moment for the school."

The new building is designed to accommodate 950 mainstream and 100 additional special needs pupils and was built at a cost of 23 million as part of South Lanarkshire Council's Schools Modernisation Programme.

It was due to open at the end of last year's summer holidays but delays led to the return after the Christmas holidays marking its public debut.

The new building boasts two gymnasia, a four-badminton-court Games Hall, a fitness suite and a dance studio, complementing the outdoor seven-a-side, floodlit all-weather pitch, all of which will be made available to the general public when not in school use.

South Lanarkshire Council leader Councillor Eddie McAvoy said: "This fantastic state-of-the-art secondary school will become a focal point in the community for pupils, staff, parents and local residents and already the council is receiving very positive feedback."
