New Lanark quarry battle reaches climax

Both scenarios were put to the three-day government Public Inquiry last week into Cemex’s application to extend its long-establshed Hyndford Quarry into the protected Buffer Zone around the New Lanark World Heritage Site.

Two Scottish Government planning officials heard evidence from those for and against the scheme at the Inquiry at the Cartland Bridge Hotel.

They are expected to make their recommendations to the government in a few months time for a final decision, probably towards the end of the year.

The Gazette has reported extensively on the two year campaign resisting the development, especially the western part of it which cuts into the beautiful old Bonnington Estate parkland, a popular walking route to both New Lanark and the Falls of Clyde; the southern extension, down through fields to the banks of the Clyde near Hyndford Bridge, is far less controversial.
