The South Lanarkshire Council planning committee granting Cemex the permission to mine 10 million tonnes of sand and gravel from the expansion to its existing Hyndford Quarry met as last week’s Gazette went to press.

At the meeting Lanark SNP councillor Vivienne Shaw attempted to make a last-minute stand against full permission being granted but her motion to limit the development to miss out the sensitive New Lanark Buffer Zone was defeated 16-7.
