That money will now allow New Lanark to vastly improve its play facilities, not only for village children but for the hundreds who come to visit the World Heritage Site every year with their parents.

The massive upgrade the cash will allow the New Lanark Trust to carry out at the play area near the famous mills comes thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Community Spaces Scotland programme.

Apart from the new play equipment being installed in the already popular open space, a new boardwalk will be provided, as will decorative “living willow structures”.

The Fund said that a nearby bog garden area will be created to “add to the site’s biodiversity”.

The majority of the site will be accessible to people with disabilities.
