New licensing laws mean early Sunday opening times for Clydesdale pubs

FOR the first time since World War One, Clydesdale folk can choose to spend Sunday mornings with the Good Lord – or with a landlord.

Since the then-strict Scottish licensing laws of a century ago were brought in, pub opening times on the Sabbath have been strictly set at 12.30pm, after most morning kirk services and the Catholic Masses have ended.

However, Clydesdale Area Licensing Board has ruled that all pubs, hotels and clubs can now open from 11am on Sundays.

It is also to allow licensed premises to break the old Saturday night/Sunday morning midnight ‘barrier’ by staying open until 1am.

The decision sparked off a wave of applications from licensees, keen to take advantage of the more liberal Sunday opening laws.

As the Gazette went to press this week, applications had been made from ten licensed premises for the new hours with Lanark publicans leading the charge with seven of them.
