The ‘Pop-up Health Library will provide health information and therapeutic book resources to community venues in areas that do not have their own libraries.

The scheme in East Dunbartonshire, the first of its kind in Scotland, will allow people to borrow books and access health information while also acting as a focus for a range of information sessions provided by local health practitioners.

The first venue for the project, which was funded as the result of a successful bid to the Public Libraries Improvement Fund that is administered by the Scottish Libraries Information Council, will be Twechar Healthy Living and Enterprise Centre.

It is then expected to visit a variety of locations in the coming months.

Scott Hill, chair of EDLC Trust, said: “Promoting health and wellbeing is a priority area for the Trust and over the last few years we have developed a range of health related initiatives.

“This is a fantastic project which will help make health materials available locally in communities not served by a static library as well as helping raise awareness of other relevant library services and resources.”

Councillor Alan Moir, convener of the Development and Regeneration Committee, added: “The Pop-up Health Library will contain a wide range of books, leaflets and information that will help promote healthier lifestyles as well as providing contact details of local health and welfare support groups that can help lessen the isolation of people living with a long-term condition.”
