New public space in Kirkintilloch Town Centre set for completion in early 2014

East Dunbartonshire’s planning board recently gave the project - part of the wider regeneration of the centre of Kirkintilloch - on Cowgate at the entrance to St Mary’s Parish Church.

There had been some objections to the plans, including that better seating should be provided and that the project would benefit the church more than the wider community, but now it has been rubber-stamped work will start before the end of the year, with completion early next year.

Thomas Glen, the council’s director of development and regeneration, explained: “Planning permission was granted at planning board for an element of the works included in the project to improve and extend public space at barley bank.

“Planning and listed consent is required for a small section of the proposal as it affects a listed building and its curtilage with plans to widen the opening between St Mary’s church and the new public space.

“The public realm project at barley bank was born out of extensive consultation work and will see a high quality area of public space created which amongst other things responds to one of the town centres key assets, the canal, and key building like St Mary’s.

“A contractor will be procured over the autumn with a target completion date set as March 2014.”
