New school opens its doors to pupils old and new

THE wrappers have officially come off Chryston High School and Cultural Centre ... and it’s not even Christmas yet.

A new era has begun for staff and youngsters – and the community – who will use the facilities.

Provost Jim Robertson unveiled a plaque and described the complex as “fantastic”.

He said: “The school is designed to give our young people the best start in life we can give them.

“The contractor Morgan Sindall has done a marvellous job and developed excellent working relations with the head teacher and her staff.

“I’m sure the residents of Chryston, Gartcosh and Stepps will appreciate these fantastic facilities to benefit their communities.”

Linda Johnston, head teacher of Chryston High, said: “The ceremony launches an exciting new era for the school.

“Our new sports facilities are already proving popular with local teams and it’s clear the new school and cultural centre will keep Chryston High at the hub of the local community for years to come.

“It’s a stunning new building, housing the very best facilities and equipment.”

School chaplain, the Reverend Mark Malcolm, gave a blessing and dedication at the recent opening.

Also in attendance was Sir Charles Gray, former local councillor and education convener, who championed the case for a new school.

Work on the £23.3million project started in August 2010, and pupils and staff moved in two years later.

Every teaching area has a data projector and an interactive ‘whiteboard’. The enhanced facilities include state-of-the-art science, computing and home economics classrooms. The music department even boasts a recording studio.

In addition, the school has a fitness suite, spacious library, enhanced social areas and a four-court games hall.

The all-weather 3G pitch is planned to open for pupil and community use in April next year.
