New signs point way ahead for Cumbernauld

NEW signs are set to be installed in Cumbernauld town centre to direct shoppers and visitors to local services and facilities.

North Lanarkshire Council is working in partnership with Campsies Centres (Cumbernauld) Ltd and the three shopping centre owners to implement the £300,000 Cumbernauld Town Centre Signage Strategy.

A variety of signs will point pedestrians and drivers from main routes to the town centre and arrival points to car parks, shopping centres, public buildings, the Tryst Sports Centre and public transport links.

Each sign will feature an image of the Arria sculpture, which stands on the A80 and is a symbol of the town.

Local residents can see an example of the new signs when a prototype goes on display in the shopping centres during November and December. The signs are set to be installed in February.

Work is progressing on designing internal signage for the three shopping centres and the main arrival bus stops on Central Way. The signs will display a strong welcome message to the town and the shopping centres. These signs will be installed in early 2012.

Councillor William Hogg, convener of the North Area LAP, said: “Our strategy has been designed to provide clear, modern signs that will create an attractive feature in the town centre.

“This much-needed signage will incorporate map information, street and road names and will help visitors find their way to the town centre from the railway station and other main arrival points on foot, public transport and by car.”

Councillor Gerry McElroy, chairman of Campsies Centre Cumbernauld Ltd, added: “With the stunning Arria sculpture now synonymous with Cumbernauld, her image will feature on all the new signage within the town centre,” .

“Their design will make the signs themselves an interesting new feature within the town centre, as well as encouraging people to use the excellent local facilities.”

The council and Campsies Centres (Cumbernauld) Ltd are investing a total of £300,000 in the Cumbernauld Town Centre Signage Strategy. Plans are also being developed by the council for improvements at Central Way, including new railings, drainage works and lighting at the bus station (see story, page three). The plans are on display at Cumbernauld College and Cumbernauld Library. Electronic questionnaire machines and comments boxes are available for registering feedback.
