New year messages: an incredible year in Glasgow’s history

The summer is one that will live long in our memories as we hosted the biggest sporting event that Scotland, let alone Glasgow, has ever seen.

As lord provost it was a privilege to welcome visitors from across the globe to experience the unique, electric atmosphere the 2014 Commonwealth Games created.

Glasgow shone in the spotlight. Those 10 glorious days of sport may be over but they promise this city a lasting, positive legacy for years to come.

Following the games, Glasgow came together to lead the UK’s First World War centenary commemorations joined by civic and political leaders from across the Commonwealth.

The sombre services at Glasgow Cathedral and George Square were poignant reminders of the terrible consequence of conflict and a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by men and women during the Great War and in combat since.

It’s a year that has also been punctuated by grief, sadness and shock. The aftermath of the Clutha Vaults helicopter crash and the unfolding George Square tragedy has tested this city. For everyone personally affected by these horrific events my prayers and thoughts are with you.

Glasgow has proven itself as a world-class city — a friendly, welcoming, generous city. It has also shown itself to be a compassionate and caring city with a steely strength.

It is truly beyond doubt that its people who make Glasgow.
