New year start for Cumbernauld bus station

Council bosses have stated that work on a long-awaited plans to revamp Cumbernauld Bus Station could start in January.

The decades-old transport hub has been dubbed the worst facility of its kind in Scotland - amidst claims that it is an eyesore with a crowded layout that is a risk to traffic .

A blueprint for a new version will bring full height glass frontage toe the passenger waiting areas, improved lighting and visibility at the bus stops, and clearer information points.

There are also plans for kiosks on either side of the of the dual carriageway plus automatic doors.

A council spokesperson said: “Planning permission has been granted and the partners, North Lanarkshire council, Campsies Centre (Cumbernauld) Ltd, Strathclyde Passenger Transport and Hamcap Cumbernauld LLP are working towards signing the design and construction contract next month.

“The project will be carried out through a public private partnership, Hub West, principally by Doig and Smith and Keir Construction.

“Subject to final agreement of the contract and other legal agreements, work could start on-site in January.

“Details to the temporary changes of the operation of the bus stances during the work will be provided for passengers before the work itself starts.”
