From its five campuses – City, West End, Springburn, Easterhouse and East End - the college will deliver programmes from introductory to degree level, with a focus on relevant workplace, vocational and personal development skills.

Michael Russell unveiled a plaque at the college’s Springburn campus. He said: “This is an exciting day for the staff and students of Glasgow Kelvin College. It is a tribute to their hard work that this milestone has been reached.

“The aim of these reforms has always been about making the college sector work for students, communities, staff and employers and creating opportunities for them to thrive.

“Colleges have a hugely important role in growing our local and national economies by developing people’s skills and getting them ready for work.

“By creating colleges of scale and influence, and combining resources and expertise, we make the journey onto further learning or into work easier.”

The roots of North Glasgow College began in 1964 with the opening of Springburn College of Engineering. A new

£43million building opened across the road from its previous premises in Flemington Street in 2008.

Ronnie Knox, who was the principal of North Glasgow College, decided to step down during the merger after 38 years at the college.
