NHS urges all to be health-wise for the festive season

The roadshow is on tour, landing in Glasgow this week and visiting Pollok today (Thursday) for the southside leg.

There, campaign mascot Dr Owl is offering tips for families to enjoy a healthy festive period, including knowing when your GP surgery is closed, stocking up on basic medication and referring to NHS 24 for out-of-hours health questions.

Professor George Crooks, NHS 24 medical director, explained: “The Be Health-Wise This Winter roadshow offers the ideal opportunity for Glaswegians to take some time out from their Christmas shopping to get some important information about their health.

“Listen to the wise words of Dr Owl and make sure you have cough and cold remedies at home to deal with any winter ailments. Your local pharmacist is also a good source of information and advice on what to have in your medicine cabinet.

“If you need to visit your GP, try to schedule an appointment before the festive period, and make sure you submit your repeat prescription and pick it up in plenty of time.”

GP surgeries will be closed for four days at Christmas (December 25-28) and four days at New Year (January 1-4), re-opening on Monday, January 5.
