NLC prepares for winter weather

The local authority, which works in partnership with Amey, has reviewed its winter service policy and procedures, and officials say they have the resources ready to deal with the weather.

The council confirmed it has 20,000 tonnes of salt in stock, Amey’s fleet of 32 gritters is on stand-by and 1,925 grit bins have been filled.

In addition, contingency plans are in place to minimise disruption to council services caused by severe weather.

Council officers are monitoring specialist weather forecasts daily to decide when the roads and pavements need to be treated.

The council is asking residents to plan ahead too – and make sure they’re ready for winter.

Councillor James Coyle said: “At the council we’re ready to deal with the winter weather ahead, and it’s important our residents take time now to be prepared. Don’t wait until the first ice or snow arrives, get organised now to save time and trouble later.

‘‘The council’s web site has information and advice on how to cope with severe weather at home and on the roads, so it’s worth thinking ahead to reduce the risk of being caught out.”

A limited number of free winter packs for drivers are available, on a first come first serve basis, at the council offices at Fleming House in Cumbernauld.
