No money from Silver Bell race ‘is Lanark’s own fault’

IT’S Lanark’s own fault if it didn’t make a penny out of the deal to sell its historic Silver Bell Race to Hamilton.

So said the man who began the moves which led to the ancient trophy and race being taken out of mothballs 30 years after the closure of Lanark Racecourse and being reborn at Hamilton Park.

Negotiations over the transfer three years ago were largely brokered by Frank Gunning, chairman of Lanark Community Council, who is now unapologetic that the deal didn’t bring the expected thousands of pounds in cash benefits for local youngsters.

He was giving his report to the community council of his visit as an official guest at the third running of the race at Hamilton last month.
