Opinion split over new village community hub

The facility for Lennoxtown Main Street will include a library, cafe, GP practices, housing offices and community spaces.

SEPA has objected to the plans specifically in relation to the watercourse and the impact the proposed culvert will have on the water environment.

The planning application will now be referred to Scottish ministers.

A total of 17 objections were submitted to the plans. Concerns included the style and design of the proposed building being out of keeping with other buildings on Main Street and that there was a lack of consultation.

Campsie and Kirkintilloch North councillor David Ritchie is in favour of the hub, but said: “The board had an opportunity to deliver a building for the village that would be an asset for years to come and would fit in with the existing main street, but that opportunity has now been lost.”

Councillor Ritchie also hit out at plans to demolish the post office to make way for the hub and replace it with landscaping.

It’s understood a deal is also being done with the Post Office.

Councillor Ritchie said: “It’s costing a lot of money just to plant some trees.”

Thomas Glen, the council’s director of development and regeneration, said: “No decision has yet been made –  negotiations are on going.”
