A LUXURY home in Westerwood won no fewer than two industry awards for its design. The opulent residence built by Cala Homes in Eaglesrise development won the Best Innovation in the 1996 What House awards - and then it was named House Beautiful magazine’s Energy Efficient Home of the Year.

1987

CUMBERNAULD was blazing a trail when the official opening of the Gateway Superstore finally took place. The store which was situated in the former Woolco premises was the first in Scotland and brought 372 jobs to the town.

1977

STARS were heading for Cumbernauld after a local pub secured an exceptional bunch of acts to entertain their punters. The Maltings would play host to The Tremeloes, The Searchers plus soul singer Emile Ford and top Irish comic Adrien Walsh.

1972

CUMBERNAULD High School goalkeeper Robert McKell took the first steps towards turning pro after signing on for Dundee United. At Tannadice, he would be taken under the wing of the First Division’s youngest boss – legendary Jim McLean.
