1997

TRIBUTES were paid to well-loved Cumbernauld Village historian Robert Fleming who passed away, aged 80. Mr Fleming of Roadside head the held the position of registrar, district clerk and inspector of the poor. He was also chairman of the local area education committee. Mr Fleming had also been made a honourary vice president of Cumbernauld United. Councillor Gordon Murray said: “He was a man of invaluable qualities with immense local knowledge.Robert was quiet and retiring but made of steel underneath.’’

1987

CUMBERNAULD’S shopping scene was given a welcome boost after supermarket Gateway finally announced it would open on February 3. Cumbernauld was the first town in Scotland to open a branch of the chain.

1977

A TASTE of life behind the Iron Curtain- that is what town centre travel agency Scotia Holidays were offering. Trips to the USSR and Romania started at £138!

1972

WORK was set to get underway at a new primary school in Ravenswood within a year. The built-up area was served by Seafar Primary School but Cumbernauld Development Corporation had been pressing Dunbarton County Council for a new facility.
