BOOTLEG hooch was doing the rounds in Cumbernauld – and its ingredients could make tipplers quite literally blind drunk. For a selection of spirits billed as Russian vodka and Royal Game finest blended Scotch whiskey contained methylated spirits, North Lanarkshire Council warned.

1987

THERE was New Year Honours List joy for Cumbernauld Village woman Elizabeth Roy. Miss Roy would become a MBE for her 40 years work in the civil service which had culminated in a top Department of Employment post.

1977

THE NEW town reached an important milestone – its 21st birthday. Cumbernauld Development Corporation had a series of celebrations planned in this key year and pledged to reveal all in due course.

1972

SHOPPERS were delighted to learn that Phase 2 of Cumbernauld Centre would be opening in February and that two thirds of the business premises therein had been snapped up by investors. It would seem that supermarket Templeton’s had acted as a magnet for other retailers.
