Ordeal of girl (9) as teenager reported

A CUMBERNAULD schoolboy has been arrested for allegedly making sexually explicit remarks to a nine-year-old girl on Easter Sunday.

It is understood that the 14-year-old boy approached the child in the North Carbrain Road area around 1.55pm and subjected her to inappropriate comments. Initial reports suggested this was an attempted abduction but that was not the case.

After police were called an extensive door-to-door enquiry got under way in Carbrain. Extra officers were drafted in to reassure the public.

Those enquiries are believed to have led them to the teenager who they believe was responsible.

The area commander for Cumbernauld, Chief Inspector Brian Connell, said: “I would like to stress that this was an isolated incident which was concluded quickly.”

He added: “Extra officers will be in the area and anyone with any concerns should approach these officers or local police office.”

The News and Chronicle tried to find out what steps, if any, would be taken against the accused teenager on his return to school, such as a possible suspension.

A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council said: “This is a police matter so it’s not appropriate for us to comment.’’
