'˜Our children deserve better facilities'

At present the play park between Braehead Drive and Keir Hardie Drive consists of just a swing set and a climbing frame on a large patch of bumpy grass.

However a group of local residents hope the community can improve the situation and interested in doing so are being asked to attend a meeting in the Joe McKay Centre tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6.30pm.

One of the organisers Linda Duffy said: “I remember playing here as a child when I came to visit my Gran and over the years it has certainly gone downhill.

“There is nothing there now but a few swings and a spider-shaped climbing frame now as every time equipment was removed it was never replaced.

“We think it is about time improvements were made, but there is a need to reignite community spirit in order to make that happen.

“We are hoping we can form a residents’ committee and once we are properly organised can find out about various funding streams available to us.

“Our children deserve better facilities and we’d love to create a multi-sports area like they have in other places so it is attractive for all ages from little children right up to teenagers.

“First we need to find out how much interest there is in pursuing this, so we are asking parents and grandparents who are unhappy with the play are to come along to the Joe McKay Centre.”
