Owenstown planning application is lodged

THE first real step has been taken to create an entirely new town the size of Lanark in the Clydesdale countryside.

After years in preparation, the official planning application to build Owenstown was lodged with South Lanarkshire Council on Wednesday with the promise of 6000 jobs being initially created to construct 3200 new homes in the Douglas Valley.

It is probably the single most important development planned for the Clydesdale area in decades.

A spokesman for the developers pledged to the Gazette this week that Owenstown would NOT be a wealthy, closed ‘colony’ within sight of some of Clydesdale’s most beleaguered villages like Rigside; the 3200 homes being built would all be in the “affordable” category and the whole community created on the principles of Robert Owen’s social model, New Lanark.
