Parish priest celebrates silver jubilee

Popular parish priest Fr Kenny Campbell has celebrated 25 year since his ordination with a service at his local church in Muirhead.

At a packed St Barbara’s Church Fr Campbell - who was ordained in 1991 and has served in parishes in Motherwell, Coatbridge and Airdrie, and also had a lengthy spell as chaplain to Columba High School in Coatbridge - had a mass in his honour conducted by Fr. John Eagers of the Diocese of Paisley. Fr Campbell has been parish priest in St Barbara’s for nearly five years.

Fr Artur Krawczenko from the Diocese of Syracuse, USA also gave a humorous vote of thanks to Fr Campbell after holy communion.

Local parishioner and ex-leader of Strathclyde Regional Council, Sir Charles Gray, was on hand to present Fr Campbell with a cheque.

Reflecting on 25 years of priesthood, Fr Campbell said: “I’ve been blessed with the support of a wide group of friends and parishioners over the years. My work has been sustained and my life enriched by the people I’ve served.”

Fr Campbell has a reputation for taking on a challenge, particularly where that challenge involves building works. During the mass he thanked the people of St Barbara’s for allowing him to ‘pull their church down around them!’

Fr Campbell was joined by brother priests from across the Diocese of Motherwell at the service, and from further afield.

St Barbara’s is a parish in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Motherwell and is situated in the north of the diocese in Elmira Road, Muirhead.
