Parishioner unhappy at state of St Mary’s Cemetery

AN angry parishioner has hit out at the poor state of Lanark’s Catholic cemetery and urged the parish priest and the local diocese to act.

The man contacted the Gazette last week having visited St Mary’s cemetery last Sunday and Tuesday to tend to the graves of loved ones.

However, he was shocked to see the poor condition of it and wants action to be taken.

The parishioner, who asked not to be named, said: “I went up to the cemetery on Sunday to see my daughter and other family members and was really unhappy about the state it was in.

“The grass wasn’t cut and the whole place was just in a mess; I was going absolutely ballistic.

“I went back up last Tuesday night and it had been tidied up but it could still be done to a higher standard.”

The Gazette contacted the Diocese of Motherwell for its response to the parishioner’s claims.

A spokesperson said that the Diocese had no record of any complaint about the upkeep of St Mary’s cemetery but urged the parishioner in question to speak to his parish priest directly or to make an official complaint to the Diocese.
