Park is perfect backdrop for learning

East Renfrewshire’s adult learning team have organised a series of sessions across the area this summer for people who use English as a second language.

It follows the success of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) sessions last year in Rouken Glen Park.

The team has joined forces with the park’s activities ranger, Katy Green, and will hold events in August at Barrhead, Thornliebank, Newton Mearns and Giffnock.

In an earlier event, the woods provided a base for ESOL groups to take part in fun activities.

Parents and children from Japan, South Korea, France, Hong Kong and Scotland worked together to build a shelter to sit under whilst making hot chocolate in a Kelly Kettle.

Team activities prompted the families to communicate in English, whilst having fun and getting to know new people.

On the second day, the rain did not deter the groups as they made wind charms with resources collected from the woods.

Back in the pavilion, there was time to mingle, make new friends and rise to the challenges set which provided the families with a great opportunity to practise English.

ESOL workers from East Renfrewshire’s adult learning team would like to thank the Rouken Glen staff for making these events possible and look forward to more fun events in the future.
