Parking at the school gates still a scramble?

Parents stopping close to the school gates remains a burning issue at Our Lady of the Missions Primary, despite repeated police and council drives to encourage safe parking.

Last spring, East Renfrewshire cops organised a month-long safety initiative in a bid to curb dangerous driving on the school run, targeting schools with higher numbers of incidents and asking parents to consider the safety of other children.

At OLM Primary, the Parent Council has attempted to calm the situation by erecting no parking signs.

One parent, who asked not to be named, told The Extra: “Folk try to ram their way out — there are plenty of spaces but they want a quick getaway.

“The situation has improved due to the parent council putting no parking signs on the access road. However, they’ve just moved on to obstruct the other car park [nearby].”

A spokeswoman for East Renfrewshire Council confirmed that road safety and irresponsible parking remain issues at OLM, but added that the school, parent council and police have been working together to address the problem.

She said: “There has been a great deal of road safety work done around the school and the message is regularly highlighted both at OLM and at all our schools.

“The parent council has been very proactive in reminding parents where they should park — new signage and banners have been put up and the school has sent emails detailing where parents should park.

“Our campus cop has also been working to educate parents and reminding them they may receive a parking ticket if they do not adhere to regulations.

“We would urge parents and members of the public to park and drive responsibly. The safety of all our children is of paramount importance, and we are asking everyone to work with us on this.”
