Last week saw workers start widening the pavement between David Donnelly Place and Cowgate, while work to resurface Broadcroft continues to improve pedestrian access into town.

The town centre ‘masterplan’ also includes an improved public area at David Donnelly Place and better landscaping on the pedestrian link between David Donnelly Place and New Lairdsland Road, at Smiths Hotel.

It is anticipated that the works will be completed by April this year.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “The latest improvements in Kirkintilloch town centre are extremely welcome and another positive sign that we are delivering on the masterplan.

“I’m pleased with the success of the West High Street pedestrian link, which has improved town centre access adjacent to Kirkintilloch Hub and William Patrick Library, and this project will bring similar benefits.

“The wider pavements will ensure better accessibility for the community, while the landscaping will improve the whole look of the area.”

A red telephone box will be placed in the new-look public space in support of Kirkintilloch & District Community Development Trust, which is re-introducing them into the town centre as public art, information points and other uses. They also reflect Kirkintilloch’s strong industrial heritage.

Councillor Geekie added: “It’s a great example of how we can all work together innovatively and positively to help breathe new life into town centres such as Kirkintilloch.”
