Peak-hour congestionputs brakes on traffic

CONGESTION chaos is suffocating roads in Cumbernauld as an overspill of re-directed traffic makes it way to and from the A80 road works.

The Old Inn roundabout has come to a standstill over recent weeks during rush hour traffic, causing tailbacks and delays for local residents and commuters as a result of road closures and diversions throughout the town.

The eyesore of the A80 upgrades has been a focal point for community anger in the past year and now road closures at Castlecary and Seabegs Bridge are causing more dissatisfaction.

The News has been inundated with calls regarding the congestion.

One frustrated resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “The closure at Seabegs Bridge means that you’re getting diverted on through Walton Road, which is basically a farm road.

“It’s very narrow and full of potholes and has sharp turns.

“If they were going to close roads to compensate for other road works, then surely they should have picked more suitable alternative travel routes.”

Other commuters have bemoaned the lack of directions on the upgrade road works and the diverted routes.

However, Transport Scotland has said that the roadworks are reviewed on a daily basis and any improvements that can be made will be put into effect.

A link to the Transport Scotland website, detailing all of the road works in the area and for how long they can be expected to last, is available on our homepage at www.cumbernauld-news.co.uk and our Twitter page, twitter.com/NewsandChron.
