Myra Carnegie (80) and 75-year-old pal Jess Thom have been travelling to Lanark to enjoy the Lanimer celebrations for more than a decade.

The pals were travelling up from Castlebank Park but stopped at a wall to rest before popping over to a nearby cafe at around 3.30pm.

It was there that Mrs Carnegie discovered she had lost her bag.

She said: “I must have left it at the wall. It had my pension card and my bus pass.

“When I went to the police station I couldn’t believe it had been handed in.

“The staff at the police station were fantastic and couldn’t have been more helpful but they were unable to give me the number or address of the family so I could personally thank them.”

The incident highlighted the community spirit of those living in the town on a day when only one minor assault was reported to police and no-one spent Lanimer night locked up.
