Big-hearted Bearsden care home worker knits poppies for residents

Susan Rae, a hotel services team member at Antonine House Care Home, has knitted more than 70 poppies ahead of Remembrance Day, which took place yesterday (Wednesday, November 11.)

Susan started the project back in August as her way to pay her respects to The Royal British Legion.

She said: “Our ‘knit and a natter’ group at Antonine House has been very popular recently. Our latest project is a patchwork blanket where we’re all knitting small squares to add into it – it’s already looking really impressive. Afternoons with the residents while we sit and work on projects are really special.

“As a personal knitting project I’ve been creating these remembrance poppies for residents and staff.

“As this year’s appeal and remembrance services are hampered by the current restrictions caused by the pandemic I’m glad we all have our own knitted poppies to mark this year’s Remembrance Day in a special way and pay our respects.”

Amanda King, care home manager at Antonine House, said: “This is a fantastic initiative from Susan and thanks to her, our care home has a truly personal tribute for Remembrance Day, which is more important than ever when other plans cannot go ahead this year.

“ Our residents are already wearing the poppies with enormous pride.”
