Broom Park spruced up

Broom Park, which is under threat from development, as East Renfrewshire Council proposes to develop 60 flats and retail units was given a make-over recently.

Sixteen people went out in the cold and rain and filled over 20 refuse sacks on a Saturday morning, ably assisted by assorted children and Roxy the dog.

The volunteers are going back in March and more residents have already pledged their time to the project, with the cleanup crew hoping for better weather for the proposed BBQ after the next tidy up of the park.

“The point we were making was we love our park” said one of the volunteers, CllrJim Swift who continued “Thanks to so many people for coming out and helping make Broom Park even better on a truly horrible morning.

“Funny thing was, even in the rain it was great fun, a real community feeling and buoyancy about the event and a sense of optimism about the future of our park.

“The Council have agreed to put extra bins on the route to Mearns Castle from the Broom shops, so hopefully that will help reduce the amount of litter within the park.

This has been set up as a direct response to the council’s proposals and at the time of going to press had more than 1300 members.

The group would welcome any new members who have an interest in Broom Park or the loss of green spaces.
