As guiding groups adapt to the new Coronavirus restrictions, the organisation’s volunteers are committed to deliver guiding in new and innovative ways to continue to keep connected and empower girls and young women.

Many groups continue to meet online, following a move to virtual guiding after face-to-face meetings were suspended during lockdown.

Groups such as the 1st Bearsden Rainbow unit have continued to stay connected through weekly Zoom, Facebook or outdoor activities, with up to 20 girls regularly taking part.

The group have enjoyed outdoor games and obstacle races in the park and are looking forward to the spring to go outside again.

In addition to simply enjoying chatting together, fun activities via Zoom or Facebook have included a quiz, bingo, drawing and stories.

Girls have also taken on challenges, including Girlguiding’s ‘Act your Age’ BBC Children in Need challenge. They’ve also shared pictures of nature walks and even showed their disco dancing moves, working towards earning their badges at home.

Cara (6) a member of the 1st Bearsden Rainbows, said: “I have loved being part of my Rainbows unit, even during lockdown!

"The Zoom calls are so much fun and it’s great that I get to see my friends and leaders. My favourite thing was the Pudsey challenge!”

Maggie Baister, a leader with 1st Bearsden Rainbows, said: “Although it’s been quite a challenge, I’m so pleased we have kept our meetings and contact with the girls going and I’m delighted at how well we have all adapted to alternative ways of running our activities.

“At this age group we are dependent on families to allow girls to take part and I’m so grateful for the continuing support of all our parents. As a leader, the best reward of all is to see all their smiling faces every week. It’s a joy and I would recommend it to anyone.”
