Declutter event at silverburn saves 80kg clothes going to landfill

More than 80kg of pre-loved clothes will be donated to Oxfam as part of the Declutter to Refresh pop up event at Silverburn.

The event encouraged Glasgow shoppers to recycle before refreshing their wardrobes this autumn winter season to ensure less clothing goes to landfill.

When waste – such as clothing - is sent to landfill, it omits harmful gases into the earth’s atmosphere but the 80kg of clothes collected at Silverburn is equivalent to almost 0.76 tonnes of carbon gases being avoided.

David Pierotti, General Manager at Silverburn said: “This event was designed to help people give their old wardrobe new love and inspire people to shop smarter. We’re proud to see the people of Glasgow got involved and together we donated over 80kg to Oxfam. This is a first step in raising awareness and changing consumer behaviour around the issues of surrounding sustainability and the fashion industry.”

After handing in their old clothes, shoppers were invited to explore the ‘Declutter to Refresh’ area, where three professional stylists were giving out free, expert advice on giving old wardrobes new love and introducing shoppers to the capsule concept.

The stylists used only 25 items to create 100 brand new autumn winter 19 looks and the outfits then displayed in four giant wardrobe pods for shoppers to browse and get inspired.
