East Renfrewshire celebrates Beat the Street success

East Renfrewshire has once again successfully completed its Beat the Street challenge.

A total of 9,937 people from across the area have joined community, school and workplace teams and together walked, cycled, scooted, run and wheeled 111,611.5 miles over the past six weeks.

Organisers also pledged that if participants exceeded 100,000 miles, they would donate £500 to the SupERkids charity.

Nicola Kelly from SupERkids said: “All donations are greatly appreciated and go directly to providing support for East Renfrewshire’s children with additional support needs.

“I expect that we will use £500 to provide support to a child with ASN to attend an activity. Every hour of support cost us £15 so we can provide 33 hours of one-to-one support to enable a disabled child to participate in an activity, most likely a trip out to a local attraction. Thank you so much for your generous support.”

Crookfur Primary School will receive £300 in vouchers for topping each leaderboard which they can spend on books or sports equipment. Head teacher Sheena McGuigan said: “We are delighted to have been crowned winners of the Beat the Street competition. Our families have really enjoyed playing throughout the competition, on the school run, weekends and evenings. Whether walking the dog or out for a cycle they have been sure to tap any Beat Boxes they pass.

“This is a fantastic achievement for our school and is testament to the amazing community spirit we have in Crookfur.”

Susan Galbraith from the HSCP Pharmacy Team who topped the small games leaderboard added: “We have all enjoyed participating in the game! As many of us are working from home currently and moving less than normal as a result, Beat the Street East Renfrewshire has been a great motivation to get moving more. We’ve all made more effort to get out for exercise before or after work or at lunchtime often taking the long route to get places to get extra points! Thanks and please come back to East Renfrewshire again soon!

Councillor Tony Buchanan, Leader of East Renfrewshire Council, added: “Congratulations to all the winning teams in Beat the Street and well done to every person who participated.

“Thank you for taking part safely and hopefully it will inspire more young people to make exercise part of their day by walking, cycling or even scootering to school.”

The team who deliver Beat the Street would love to get feedback from participants and a short survey will be landing in email inboxes shortly.

Beat the Street is commissioned by East Renfrewshire Council in partnership with Paths for All’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme and the Scottish Government.
