Final push for Beat the Street in East Renfrewshire

There are currently more than 9,800 people taking part in the walking and cycling game and together, participants have travelled more than 95,000 miles.

If participants can go further than 100,000 miles, organisers will give a £500 donation to local charity SupERkids who provide support for children with disabilities.

Taking place until Wednesday, 11th November, Beat the Street has transformed the whole of East Renfrewshire into a lifesize outdoor physical activity game where residents are rewarded with points and prizes for walking, cycling or scooting around their community.

Schools, community groups and workplaces have been battling it out for the past several weeks to take home prizes of up to £300 in vouchers for books, sports or fitness equipment if they top the leaderboard. Crookfur Primary School currently leads both the total and average points leaderboards for schools, with the Amazing Avengers leading the total and average points laderboard for workplace and community teams.

To encourage players to make one final push, the organisers behind Beat the Street have announced that every Beat Box in the game will be giving out double points during the final week until the game ends at 7pm on November 11.

The leaderboard will then be taken down and the winners announced shortly after the competition.

The initiative is delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of East Renfrewshire Council, Paths for All’s Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme and the Scottish Government.

Val Caldwell, Beat the Street programme manager for Scotland, said: “We’ve had a lot of feedback from players who have really found the Beat the Street game to be a source of enjoyment and family time at this time. There are prizes for the teams that travel the furthest but everyone who has got more active is a winner.”
