Govanhill Housing Association reaches another milestone in buy and repair programme

The milestone marks the halfway point in the current four-year South West Govanhill buy and repair programme to purchase and improve some of the poorest quality housing in the area, thereby raising living conditions while also helping to tackle overcrowding and deliver a more effective system of property management and maintenance.

All 300 of these flats will be renovated to a high standard and then offered for social rent by the Association, increasing the supply of much needed affordable homes in the area. So far, the Association has improved and let over 160 homes with another 120 properties currently being renovated.

Annie, Macfarlane, chairwoman, who lives in the target area of the programme, said: “It’s really encouraging that the initiative has reached the milestone of 300 property acquisitions, and that we are continuing to make progress in undertaking the required improvements and bringing more properties into the social rented sector.

“Addressing the issues that exist in South-West Govanhill requires a long-term, co-ordinated approach; that said, we are starting to see the results of our efforts. In particular, the Association taking over the factoring of unmanaged and problematic closes has made a visible and real difference to the quality of life for the residents.

“We are pleased to have the support of the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council to be able to continue to purchase properties within the area in order to ensure that long term, lasting change is delivered for the community.”

Housing minister Kevin Stewart said: “Congratulations to Govanhill Housing Association on reaching this important milestone with their acquisition and repair programme. Bringing back 300 properties into the social rented sector will improve the lives of the residents, contribute to the overall regeneration of the area and help to empower the community.

“Access to good quality housing is a vital part of our drive to secure economic growth, promote social justice, strengthen communities and tackle inequalities. That’s why this government is investing more than £3 billion to deliver at least 50,000 affordable homes – 35,000 for social rent – over the lifetime of this Parliament.

“By continuing to work together with Glasgow City Council and Govanhill Housing Association we can make lasting improvements to the lives of the people who live here.”

All of the acquired flats have - or will be - improved to a high standard and will be let for much needed social housing, and this is great news for residents living in the area.
