Happy birthday Isa - 100-years

Isabella Paterson, or Wallace as she was born, has seen a lot of changes in the world over her 100 years, and, just as many of her age did during the war years are facing Covid-19 with the same fortitude.

She was born on March 28 1920 to Elizabeth Mason and Samuel Wallace. The second of five children, Samuel, Isabella, Robert, Betty and Alex. They lived and were raised during their formative years at 359 Meadowhead Road, Craigneuk.

Isa as she was better known, left school at 14 and went to work in Archibald’s Jam and Confectionery business. She tells the story of being sent on a delivery to Clydebank after the blitz, of the destruction she witnessed, windows blown out and shrapnel everywhere.

At 18 she was called up to do her national service and trained for five weeks before being sent to Mortons where she was trained to make detonators!

She met her husband Willie Paterson when he came from Cowdenbeath to work in Motherwell and through a family connection he lodged with her family. After the couple were married in 1943 they continued to live there where both their daughters were born, Elizabeth in 1945 and Anne in 1948.

In 1949 they moved to the prefabs in Cambusnethan where, then in 1970 when the prefabs were demolished they moved to Motherwell. For 16 years Isa worked for British Steel in Ravenscraig firstly in the canteen and then as a cook in the directors dining room until she retired

After the death of her husband in 1985 she moved to Carluke to be nearer her daughters. She had always loved dancing and on moving made lots of new friends by joining various clubs for line and sequence dancing which she continued to enjoy until she was in her early 80s.

She is a member of St Andrews Church and still attends regularly on a Sunday .

In 2012 she moved to Kirkton Court where she is very happy

She has two daughters, four grandsons and loves spending time with her nine great grandchildren. She has one surviving brother Alex who will be 90 this year and lives nearby at Fleming Court.

Unfortunately the party had to be cancelled, however grandson Craig who lives in Atlanta is a friend of Nick Dixon, of breakfast TV, who arranged for Lorraine Kelly to record a video wishing her a happy birthday, while the care home arranged for a piper to attend and play a selection of tunes for her.
